The closing, title track of the definitive easy listening/bossa nova album of all time, 'Desafinado' closes out the album with a gentle, warm ending that can easily be described as mirroring the feeling one gets following lovemaking. It comes as no surprise, really, as the album was and remains one of the great 'make-out' albums of all time. One of the slower songs on the album, it differs from many of the other songs on the record in that the tempo at the outset of the song is driven by the trumpet and piano lines, rather that exotic, Latin-based percussion. The laziness of the trumpet line cast against the seductive string arrangement is breathtaking. Soon enough, this introduction ends, and Jobim's patented percussion and piano lines take over. In many ways, the cocktail style of piano here is strongly reminiscent of one of the album's other great songs, 'One Note Samba.' Juxtaposing this is a fabulous flute figure, giving the song a wonderful lightness. The song ends on an odd minor-chord string crescendo, and this makes the coda as memorable as the actual melody itself.
